A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS: A BOOK REVIEW.

"One could not count the moons

that shimmer on her roofs,

Or the thousand splendid suns

that hide behind her walls."

Khaled Hosseini through his heart -tugging novels in his native Afghanistan, offer simple tales of grace, courage, love and redemption. Hosseini uses his stories to put forward the heart-wrenching reality of his country in front of the whole world.

"And that,.......is the story of our country, one invasion after another......Macedonians, Saddanians, Arabs, Mongols. Now the Soviets. but we're like those walls up there. Battered, and nothing pretty to look at. but still standing."

In the beginning of the novel we are introduced to Mariam, the illegitimate child of a wealthy movie theater owner who lives in Heart. To Mariam, he was the perfect father until she discovered the grim reality of her life. After losing her only parent, her mother her life takes a toll on her and she was married off by her step-mothers to a man called Rasheed, who was three decades older to her. The novel depicts her hardships. And this lines perfectly describe her life .

"Though there were moments of beauty, Mariam knew for the most part that life had been unkind to her."

Laila, who was a generation younger to Mariam, unlike her enjoyed all the happiness in her youth years and suddenly her life collaspes due to the filthy conditions of her country. Her father was a modern man. He always encourages her to get an education and calls her a woman that Afghanistan would need in the upcoming years. Laila's story explores a lot of taboos such as ill-treatment of a girl child and premarital sex.

"A society has no chance of success if its women are uneducated."

Laila and Tariq's love story is both a breath of fresh air as well as the ocean of agony.

"Love was a damaging mistake and its accomplice, hope. a treacherous illusion."

This book treasures Laila and Mariam's impeccable bond and their valour to remain sane in the cacophonous world and how they stuck with each other. In spite of having their own differences they were always ready to sacrifice for each other..

A Thousand Splendid Suns is indeed an unforgettable book. The characters depicted in the book will always stay with its readers. And it is undoubtedly one of my favourite books. Kindly do yourself a favour and give it a read and I am pretty sure that you will not be disappointed.
