BOOK REVIEW:

''So, then. You want a story and I will tell you one.’'

And The Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini is an epic yet simple multi-generational story with a variety of settings starting from Afghanistan to France, Greece to the United States. Unlike his other two books, the narrative of this book is quite complex wherein the narrator is constantly juggling between myriad eras, characters and locations, yet Hosseini manages to keep his readers calm and also make them feel pretty sentimental throughout the novel.

"They say, Find a purpose in your life and live it. But, sometimes, it is only after you have lived that you recognize your life had a purpose, and likely one you never had in mind."

The book starts in the small village of Afghanistan called Shadbagh, in the mids of 1950s, wherein a young father , Saboor is telling a story about a fairy to his children, Pari and Abdullah. Those innocent little siblings were unaware of the fact that their life is going to change irrevocably when they depart for Kabul. This single event takes the reader on a journey across the world.

"It's a funny thing......but people mostly have it backward. They think they live by what they want. But really, what guides them is what they're afraid of. What they don't want."

And The Mountains Echoed is not just about a single story about those siblings who are separated by fate, but a collection of nine interconnected stories, which have been woven together with the theme of loyalty, family, dependey, betrayal and abandonment.

"I learned that the world didn't see the inside of you, that it didn't care a whit about the hopes and dreams, and sorrows, that lay masked by skin."

Every story introduces the readers to new members of this first young Afghan family of Pari and Abdullah, and to the people whose lives they intermingle with.

"They tell me I must wade into waters, where I will soon drown. Before I march in, I leave this on the shore for you. I pray you find it, sister, so you will know what was in my heart as I went under."

This entire book will takes it readers on a roller coaster ride of emotions. We not only feel sadness and sorrows for the characters, but we also feel compassion, happiness at seeing everything come full circle at the end. Khaled Hosseini has always tries to show the world with his writings that his native country, Afghanistan is not to be feared and be afraid of. His once beautiful country has been wronged and ruined times and times again, though the media would have us think otherwise.

"Kabul is.......a thousand tradegies per square mile."

The final part of the book is written in a very mature and sublimed way without exaggerating the entire scene between the siblings. And that is how we can conclude that Khaled Hosseini is a great storyteller and he has proved that with just three books.

"A story is like a moving train: no matter where you hop onward, you are bound to reach your destination sooner or later."

Unlike his two former blockbuster books, this book is somewhat different yet you will not be able to put this book down, until you devour it completely.I have already reviewed them earlier. So if you are interested then do give them a read.
