Nicola Yoon is a Jamaican-American author, and she best known for her first i.e., EVERYTHING,EVERYTHING. She has also written another book called 'THE SUN IS ALSO A STAR", which is I am yet to read. In this specific blog, we are going to discuss about her first novel, which is a beautiful novel.

"Life is a gift.Don't forget to live it"

Everything, Everything is a novel about Madeline Whittier aka Maddy, who has lived her entire life inside a sterile environment ever since she was a baby because she was suffering from Severe Combined Immunodeficiency(SCID). The book begins on maddy's eighteen birthday. She used to live with her mother and her nurse Carla in California. They were her only family. We also get know that Maddy loves reading books and there are short reviews scattered around the entire book. As she could not go outside , so she used to study online. The beginning of the story is quite sad but also it tells us to be grateful for even the smallest things like being able to go out.

"My birthday is the one day of the year that we're both most acutely aware of my illness. It's the acknowledgement of the passage of time that does it. Another whole year of being sick, no hope for a cure on the horizon. Another year of missing all the normal teenagery things--learner's permit, first kiss, prom. first heartbreak, first fender bender. Another year of my mom doing nothing but working and taking care of me. Every other day these omissions are easy--easier, at least-to ignore."

Maddy's life completely changes when a new family moves in next door. And that family has two teenage children. We are introduced to them when Olly Bright and his younger sister Kara were send over to Maddy's home with a cake, but Maddy's mother doesnt accept the cake nor does she allow them to come inside as they would contaminate her daughter. Olly even asks her about Maddy, which completely startles her , because no one except her mother, nurse and her online tutors had any clue of her existence. as she had never laid her feet outside her home.

"My heart speeds up and I can feel the pulse of it against my ribs. Did he just ask about me."

Madeline and Olly share few glances from their window. They even share their e-mail ids. After a couple of conversation Maddy somehow convinces her nurse, Carla to allow Olly to visit her and after a lot of nagging , Carla agrees. Olly after decontaminating himself enters her house and they meet face to face for the first time. And after a couple of meetings she starts falling in love with him.She even reveals to him that she losst her father and brother in a car accident when she was a baby and now her mother is the only family that she has.

"I smile. I've never thought of myself as a funny girl, but I'm happy that he thinks so."

As we proceed further we get to know how Olly life isn't that different from hers. He confesses to her how his dad had become abusive in the past few years. Then one day, Maddy sees something that causes her to forget everything else, through her window and she runs away to rescue him. That's how her mother gets to know about him and Maddy's little meetings. Carla gets fired for keeping their meetings secret from her mother. Maddy feels guilty for the fact that Carla had lost her job because of her.

"Be brave, Remember, life is a gift."

Maddy and Olly somehow run away from their homes to Hawaii without actually informing anyone in person which was very brave as well as dumb of her considering her complex health conditions. She experiences everything from beaches to outside food to some romantic moments with Olly. But then her health gives away and she faints and was taken away to a hospital in Hawaii. The next time she opens her eyes she actually finds herself in her house, in California. Maddy then urges Olly to stop talking to her and that they can no longer continue meeting as she can no longer hurt her mother.

"Once lived a girl in a bubble

who I suspected was nothing

but a trouble

still I gave him my heart

but she blew it apart

and left me with nothing but rubble."

The story takes a huge turn when a doctor contacts her from Hawaii, in whose observation she was when she had got sick while she was in Hawaii. And she gets to know that she never had SCID and that her mother never really overcome the trauma of losing her husband and her son in the car accident years ago. Which is why she took extra care in protecting Maddy. Maddy even confronts her mother and is heart-broken because had ruined her life , she has robbed her off a normal childhood.

"Once upon a time there was a girl whose entire life was a lie."

Madeline and her mother's bond completely gets ruined. With the help of her nurse, Carla she contacts Dr.Chase who handles her case advises her take precautions regarding her health as her immune system was still weak because of living inside her sterile home. She even flies to New York to meet Olly and her mother does not even denies her.

"Love

Love makes people crazy

Loss of love makes people crazy."

Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon is a delightful book, it is full of every emotions be it funny, clever, heart-breaking and full of infinite questions of a teenager. This book transcends the ordinary by exploring the hopes, dreams, and inherent risks of love in all of its forms. This is a very light-hearted book and in the present time of disparity you should definitely give it a read.
