"And, when you want something,
all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it."
Paulo Coelho, a Brazilian Novelist is one of the best authors of the era. His books are mostly philosophical in a very realistic manner. In fact, it is the first book of Paulo Coelho that I have read and honestly I was not disappointed and nor will be you.
This book 'O ALQUIMISTA' was originally written in Portuguese, which after being translated to English took over the entire world.
The Alchemist (English translation of O Alquimista) is a story that revolves around an Andalusian shepherd, Santiago whose life was restricted only to his flock until a recurring dream completely changes the course of his life, and makes it completely adventurous, and also gives his life a purpose to live for. He encounters a gypsy woman for consulting his dream giving the story a new turn after which Santiago sells his flock and sets out on his quest of treasure.
"Remember that wherever your heart is, there you will find your treasure."
During the course of his travel, his beliefs gets even more stronger. His greatest incident in life was the encounter with an old man Melchizedek, king of Salem who instigates him to go after his dreams and find out what the future holds for him. The king also presents him with two stones called Urim and Thummim.
"In order to find the treasure you will have to follow the omens.
God had prepared path for everyone to follow.
You just have to read the omens that he left for you."
After a lot of ups and downs during his journey he somehow survives and continues to follow his omens that eventually lead him towards the Oasis of Al Fayoum, where he meets an Arab girl called Fatima. He falls madly in love with her but does not give up on his quest and neither Fatima holds him back.
" When we love , we always strives to become better than we are.
When we strive to become better than we are, everything around us becomes better too."
Santiago's fate leads him to an alchemist in the desert, and he even tells Santiago that the alchemist can turn base metals into gold (which is completely unrealistic ). The alchemist encourages him to accomplish his dreams instead of holding himself back because of his love for Fatima.
"You must understand that loves never keeps a man from pursuing his destiny. If he abandons that pursuit its because it wasn't true love....the love that speaks the Language of the World."
After overcoming all his adventures, he gets to know that the treasure for which he travelled across an entire different continent, was lying beneath the same place where he had the dream for the first time. After extracting his treasure he expresses his gratitude towards every omen that had lead him towards finding it. And he ultimately returns to the love his life, Fatima.
"So, I love you because the entire universe conspired to help me find you."
According to the book, achieving your dreams comes with a price but the price of not pursuing your dreams is even bigger. Fear of failure is the only thing that hold us back and this book urges everyone to let go of it.
"There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve
the fear of failure."
The author has used magical and spiritual path to put forward his message through this book. And not everything might be absolutely correct in this book but it does gives you an internal push to look at things very positively and that too in a rational manner. The Alchemist is a book that is very close to my heart as well as millions of other people. This book might even urges you to get into the habit of reading as well. So, kindly give it a go and you will never regret it.
